Mayo legend brilliantly explains why you never want to be marked by a ‘Bull’ or ‘Horse’

"Give it to him!"

Patrick McCarry

We’ve all come across gung-ho warriors like this.

You tog out, jog out and take your place on the pitch.

As you start to size up your opponents, you get an almighty shove from behind and turned around into some lads’ chest. Either that or he’s a wiry little so n’ so and you’re in for an equally tough night.

Mostly though it’s the big lump of a lad.

Brady [from 59:51 below] hilariously discussed his experience of being man-marked by a lad nicknamed ‘Horse’ during The GAA Hour Live recently at Coppers.

Brady was mostly concerned with finding scores when he lined out for club [Ballina] and county [Mayo].

That’s not to say he was a stranger to throwing himself about a bit:

When he connected, though…

Brady recalled one club game, against Clare outfit Kilmurry Ibrickane, when they were beaten ‘at fighting but not playing football’. He commented:

“I remember there was a guy put on me called Horse.

“All I heard was, ‘Give it to him Horse. Give it to him!!’

“I said to him, ‘You can be here for the next two days but you’re not going to… ‘

“I said, ‘You see them teeth? I lost them teeth by letting some lad fight me. You can hit away but you’re not winning the game.’

“He hammered me anyway. HAMMERED ME!”

Laughing, Brady agreed that hearing your man-marker called Horse or Bull is one of the parts of GAA he definitely does not missed.
