Mayo goalie scores a big whelp of a point from his own 14…with miles to spare

Niall McIntyre

The game took place in MacHale park but Gerald Kelly’s point was from another post-code.

The hardest thing to believe is that, having blasted off from his own 14 yard-line, the Mayo goalkeeper didn’t just clear the Derry cross-bar but laughed at it on the way back down.

Short puck-outs are the name of the game these days but judging by the Mayo goalkeeper’s big whelp from all of 135 yards, the direct route could have its say yet.

Yes, the west of Ireland wind was howling behind him, during Mayo’s 0-21 to 0-16 win over a Slaughtneil dominated Derry side in their Division 2B pipe-opener, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that the goalkeeper lamped that sliotar the guts of 150 yards.

Food for thought.

You can say that the sliotar is too light, you can say that long-range points are taking away from the spectacle but for a moment like this one, it’s probably worth enjoying the show.

“Go on Kelly biy.”

Clever play from Tooreen corner back Stephen Coyne, who ducked down to save himself from the smack of his life but this was all about power and placement, and Gerald Kelly, who hails from St Thomas’ in Galway, had the eye-in on Sunday.
