Marty Morrissey wins nations’ heart all over again with powerful Late Late Show appearance

Lovely stuff

Patrick McCarry

He loves these Gaelic games.

Last Sunday, as he teed up a pulsating All-Ireland Hurling Final between Kilkenny and a victorious Tipperary side, Marty Morrissey sent shivers down many a spine.

The RTE commentator, and personality, spoke to Gaels across the nation and flung to the four corners of the world. Those that did not hear his words, in bars, clubhouses, on streams and on GAA-GO, would surely have caught up midweek as they went viral. And deservedly so.

Tonight on the Late Late Show, Morrissey tugged on the nations heartstrings all over again as he spoke about spending a chunk of his childhood in a small apartment in The Bronx and his father tuning in to listen to football and hurling finals narrated by the legendary Michael O’Hehir.

Morrissey explained that he started out on his introductory words by tweeting his followers and asking where they would be watching the hurling final from. Their words, and stories shaped his. He said:

“I had ideas going around my head last Saturday but I never ever expected the reaction I got. I was overwhelmed and humbled… I’ve got tweets, emails and letters, and I thank everybody.

“I was doing what I felt was the right thing to do. I was inspired by my own life experiences.”

The smile would come to Morrissey’s father’s face as his radio picked up a signal. It was like being transported back home for 70 precious minutes.

Naturally, the reaction to Morrissey’s interview was heartfelt and warm.
