Junior B footballer improvises superbly when drafted in to play by team lacking shorts and socks

Squint hard and you'll see him

The phone shrills with a text but it’s not even breakfast time and, sure, you haven’t played in years. Still, something tells you that your unique set of skills may be required.

Bonmahon were scheduled to play a Friday evening fixture against Mount Sion and they needed a touch of that old stardust.

A little short of numbers – it was Friday night, after all – they put out the Junior B signal and coaxed a legend off the couch.

The only problem was, as it often is in junior football circles, most players are required to bring their own shorts and socks.

Bonmahon could not afford such a luxury. They needed their targetman up front. Give him a jersey and get him on.

We’ve seen some great Junior B and C moments this year, but wearing boots, regular black socks and knee-length combat shorts is right, right up there.

Combat shorts

Unfortunately for Bonmahon, they fell just short against Mount Sion. A 1-7 to 0-8 defeat but more than enough effort to really feel they earned their post-match refreshments.
