A graveyard plot for two and a Golden Charlaois heifer – Monaghan club lording it at auction

Niall McIntyre

Surely an evening with Conor McManus should be at the very top of this one.

It’s the 50th year of Corduff GAA and the Monaghan club are marking their Golden Jubilee year in style with a Gala Ball taking place this Saturday evening at the Nuremore Hotel.

With both Conor McManus and Peter Canavan confirmed as guest speakers for the Black Tie event, the evening was already drawing plenty of attention and that was before the auction list was made public.

And it looks like a real moneymaker now.

As part of the Ball and in their attempts to raise finances for the club to clear its debts and to upgrade their facilities, Corduff are having an auction on the evening with ten of what are surely the most unique and lucrative items a GAA club has ever been able to put in place for an auction.

Usually, clubs pit their resources together to come up with trailer loads of turf or timber, a few calves and maybe a bit of silage.

Corduff have gone a step further.

From the top gong, two VIP All-Ireland football final tickets to two of the equivalent for hurling – VIP meaning there will be drink and food served all day at the premium level of the stand – there are all sorts of goods in between from a Golden Charlaois Weanling Heifer to a graveyard plot for two in Corduff cemetry, or if that doesn’t suit, in the neighbouring Raferagh cemetry.

That’s some flexibility. There are also Six Nations tickets while Conor McManus sponsors the fifth item, a training session with the county’s most gifted ever forward.

Fair play to them.
