Old habits die hard.
Graham Geraghty was a fine footballer. Graham Geraghty is a fine footballer.
The phrase you can’t keep a good man down doesn’t even apply because there’s no putting the Meath legend down. Not that anyone would even try.
The two-time All-Ireland winner is still doing it though 26 years after he won the minor All-Ireland with the Royal county. But, at 43, Geraghty isn’t just still playing with Clann na nGael, he’s scoring heroic injury time goals for them too to rescue draws from nowhere.
In a Division Three All-County League match on Sunday, Geraghty lined out at centre half back with his club and finished off what was a Hollywood comeback against Dunderry.
Two minutes remaining, seven points down, game over? Not on your nelly. Not if Graham Geraghty has anything to do with it.
The Clann na nGael match report told the tale of the thrilling finale in which Geraghty rescued a 2-11 to 2-11 draw.
“Clann na nGael somehow rescued a draw with a blistering finish scoring two very late goals,” the article reads.
“The first arrived on the stroke of full time when Caoimhin O’Griofa ran along the wing and cut inside shooting low to the net. From the kick out Dunderry went the length of the pitch but unluckily hit the post which would have killed the game giving Clann na nGael one last chance.
“Anthony Swaine from around the middle of the pitch kicked in a speculative ball which the Dunderry backs looked to clear but Caoimhin O’Griofa managed to dispose his man and when he slipped the ball to Graham Geraghty on the edge of the square the large crowd held their breath. Geraghty with a shot reminiscent of some of his famous goals fired low to the corner to rescue a draw from a very unlikely position.”

We might not see the like of that for some time again. Of course, he’ll probably go and do it next week as well.
Sure you know what they say, life begins at 40.
So Graham Geraghty at 41 is back at uni and playing signerson cup. What a legend #vanwilder
