Carlsberg don’t do All-Ireland yearning but if they did, they still wouldn’t beat those of Galway hurling fans.
It’s almost the day of destiny.
Galway face Kilkenny in Sunday’s All-Ireland final and are in with a real shot of collecting their first Liam MacCarthy trophy in 27 years.
Mary Somers has been following the Tribesmen’s exertions and exultations for as long as she can remember and came across a sign, this week, that took her back.
In 2006, a ‘Carlsberg Don’t …’ banner was unveiled in Athenry to wish local hurlers Eugene and Diarmuid Cloonan the very best in the 2006 quest for All-Ireland glory.
They came up short, that year, but Eugene is back in the county set-up as a selector.
Mary came across this sign [below] and got her son, DJ Somers, to once again strike a pose. He was five back in 2006 but now plays in goal for Athenry’s U16s.
A little tweak here and there but the sentiment remains.
As Mary told us, ‘Hon Galway!’
