GAA’s controversial championship structures in serious doubt

Super 8's hit a snag

SportsJOE

Pauric Duffy won’t be too happy after tonight’s vote.

The director-general of the Gaelic Players Association championed the ‘Super 8’ format proposal, which would see the current football championship structure be replaced by two leagues of four teams. It would result in eight more championship games each summer.

Although Mayo, Kerry and Tipperary football boards have all voted in favour of the huge change, it remains a contentious one.

It received a massive blow on Wednesday evening, with the revelation that the GPA members voted against by a staggering margin. Independent.ie reported that the proposal was received a 70% against, with just 30% voting for it.

This means that the two player representative bodies are against the plan, following the Club Players Association voting against it this week.

All hope is not lost for Duffy yet though, if it receives a two-thirds majority from county boards, it will will be introduced on a three-year trial.
