It cannot be stressed enough how dangerous parts of the country are right now.
Hurricane Ophelia has struck violently all over Ireland all throughout Monday and the after-effects are going to be felt for some time.
In the sporting sphere, a number of stadia and clubs have been hit with the full force of the storm.
- Cork City’s stand collapsed.
- A dugout was ripped from a GAA ground in Tipp and blown up the pitch.
- A sports hall roof blew off and landed in a back garden.
- A Cork club watched the roof of their stand blow over a house.
There are missiles, debris, falling objects and all sorts posing very real and very dangerous risks to life as the adverse weather conditions continue.
That’s the immediate problem and, frankly, it should be the only problem right now but there are also going to be some serious reparations work required whenever the dust has settled.
In Wexford, the roof of a sturdy club complex has been completely destroyed.
The Gaels of Davidstown/Cortnacuddy have watched the storm cave in the top of their mighty clubhouse and they’ve issued several warnings for locals to stay well clear of the club grounds.
The club, situated just off the N30, a 12-minute drive from Enniscorthy, is not concerned about structural damage to the building right now, just the safety of those in the parish.
