Four-hour round-trip to have match called off due to waterlogging – the joys of Donegal GAA in May

Mikey Stafford

How to have your Bank Holiday weekend ruined.

It’s not always easy to get time off, even on the long weekends. Shifts have to be swapped, favours called in, study put on the long finger.

But it will all be worth it for an hour of ball. Just rewards for a four-hour round trip the breadth of Donegal.

The excellent Donegal Sport Hub report on how Carndonagh made the 215-kilometre trek to face Na Rossa on Sunday in a Division 4 league match, only for the match to be called off at the last minute.

The reason? A waterlogged pitch, in May.

“We traveled down, for over two hours each way, warmed up and then had no game,” Carndonagh manager Kieran Canny told DSH.

“We had lads take time off work, time out of studying for exams and all of that for nothing. It’s so frustrating and it’s hard enough to get a team out these days.”

In fairness to the referee, the video below would suggest he was not over-reacting. Serious aqua-planing potential there.

It does beg the question however as to why the Carndonagh lads were not told about the state of the field before they set off on their 107-kilometre journey.
