There was just one rule in the lunchtime kickabout.
If you had the misfortune to boot the ball out over the top of the wall, then you went and got it.
Simple, effective, and it meant certain lads would always play ‘down the court’ so they didn’t have the misfortune of embarrassing themselves having to run out on the road in front of the girls school nearby to get the football.
So perhaps the Belgium and Amsterdam GAA clubs need to enforce a similar rule after a picture submerged emerged from a game between the sides at the weekend.
The clubs share a close bond and there are regular matches played between both teams of ex-pats who are keeping the hurling and football flag flying in mainland Europe.
However, a crisis enveloped both sides as an errant size five O’Neill’s managed to end up in a canal in the middle of a Benelux tournament game at the weekend.
Thankfully, in the spirit of the European Union, they co-operated in true Irish fashion to rescue the watery situation using what looks like a goalpost of some description.
