Dublin’s James McCarthy likely to escape punishment for Donegal incident

Gareth Makim

It didn’t look pretty, but Dublin star James McCarthy looks set to be cleared over allegations of foul play against Donegal.

The half-back came under scrutiny for a clash with Donegal duo Michael Murphy and Martin McElhinney in Saturday’s Division 1 game between the sides, where McCarthy appeared to put a hand near the the eyes of McElhinney.

But slow motion replays seemed to make the incident look worse than it was, and the Irish Independent is reporting that McCarthy is unlikely to receive any added punishment beyond the yellow card issued by referee Conor Lane at the time, with the GAA’s Central Competitions Control Committee likely to determine there was no intent shown by the Dublin man.
