They’ve lived to fight another day.
The hopes of a county were resting on the shoulders of a certain Donie Smith deep into injury time, with his county one point down, and staring a quarter final defeat in the face.
Smith displayed balls of utter steel as he rifled a left footed skyscraper high into the Croke Park sky, before it dropped down over the black spot and over the bar.
Smith was relieved, his teammates were relieved, the whole of Roscommon was relieved, but there was not a sinner more relieved than Mayo man and Roscommon manager Kevin McStay.
McStay has endured tough days at the helm of Roscommon. He received sickening, tasteless abuse when his side were struggling.
He bloody well shut those critics up when the Rossies usurped Galway to lift a Connacht crown, but you can bet your bottom dollar on it that nothing would have pleased him more than to triumph on Sunday with Roscommon.
His reaction to THAT score, told it all.
