Manchester United were beaten comprehensively by Liverpool tonight, as Jurgen Klopp’s team came out 4-1 victors thanks to goals from Sadio Mané, Daniel Sturridge, Sheyi Ojo and new signing Xherdan Shaqiri.

Liverpool took the lead through a Sadio Mané penalty in the 28th minute but just three minutes later, United equalised with a stunning free kick from Andreas Pereira.

The young Brazilian bent the ball up and over the wall into the top corner, leaving Liverpool’s young goalkeeper Kamil Grabara in no man’s land. Watch and bask in its glory.

The pick of the goals came from Shaqiri. The Swiss winger, who has just signed for the Reds from Stoke, scored a trademark overhead kick from close range that showed just why Liverpool were keen to sign him.

His athleticism and physical prowess combined with his technical ability make him so dangerous in situations like this. Nobody can execute a bicycle kick quite like he can, as we learned during Euro 2016.

What a goal. What a signing.

It was just a pre-season friendly, and many players were missing, but Liverpool showed tonight why they are so far ahead of United in terms of developing a style of play and a system that allows the whole team to function.

In Mourinho’s side, the same old problems held them back again. But, of course, don’t read too much into pre-season.
