Fraser Forster over David Seaman? Go home Xavi, you’re drunk.
We reluctantly concede that Xavi knows so much more about football than we ever could by watching thousands of matches but we can’t help but feel he may have misspoke when selecting certain players in his all-time British Champions League team.
Xavi was naming the hypothetical team during an interview with shortlist.com and includes all the usual heads with Paul Gascoigne, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs all making the XI but, bizarrely, he’s given the nod to both Fraser Forster and Theo Walcott.
Neither player has come close to winning a Champions League medal but the performance of both against Xavi’s Barcelona over the years earned them their place in the XI, according to the Spaniard.
Speaking about Southampton’s goalkeeper, Xavi said: “Barcelona have met Celtic four times in recent seasons, and every time Forster put in an incredible performance. In the games we’ve played, he’s made some of the best saves I have ever seen.”
And, when discussing Arsenal’s pacy winger, the Barca ace said: “We were playing Arsenal in London [in 2010], and we were winning 2-0, in total control. There was no way we should have done anything but win the game. Then they introduced Theo Walcott. He changed the game for them and it finished 2-2. We didn’t know how to deal with his pace.”
Fair enough, we suppose.
