Now admittedly, quite a few things have to drop into place for this scenario to come about, but if they do, Pep Guardiola will be faced with a bit of a dilemma.
First of all, it requires Manchester United to leapfrog Manchester City in the Premier League and secure a fourth place finish – normally enough to secure a berth in next season’s Champions League.
Although they’re currently four points ahead of their neighbours in the league, City face some tough fixtures in the remaining weeks and stranger things have happened in the Premier League run-in.
Should that come to pass City would only be able to secure Champions League football for themselves next season by winning the competition this year.
If they are kept apart from Bayern Munich in today’s semi-final draw, and both sides progress to the final, Pep Guardiola could end up playing a key role in ensuring that City, the side he will take over in a matter of months, don’t play Champions League football next season.
Just imagine that…
