West Bromwich Albion want a LOT of money for Jonny Evans and Arsenal fans are freaking out

What a steal...

Simon Lloyd

At this late stage of the transfer window, you genuinely have to start fearing for Arsene Wenger’s life.

There’s been so little transfer activity at The Emirates this summer that some of the club’s already anti-Wenger support are foaming at the mouth with rage as Arsenal continue to not sign a new defender.

With the clock ticking away the seconds before deadline day, it seems the club are no closer to tying up a deal for Valencia’s German international, Shkodran Mustafi – whose value appears to have risen to *more than half* of one Paul Pogba.

With the Mustafi deal looking uncertain, it’s no surprise to see a few alternative names being thrown around by the media. Yet again, it seems that there could be one Jonny Evans-shaped solution to Wenger’s defensive problem.

Th2 28-year-old West Brom defender was linked with a move to Arsenal a couple of weeks ago and, according to a report in The Telegraph, could be a target for last season’s Premier League runners-up. It’s not a terrible idea, to be honest. Evans was a league winner during his time at Manchester United and would bring some useful experience to the club with Per Mertesacker nursing a dodgy knee.

But there’s a catch…

The report also claims that West Brom, fully aware that Arsenal are becoming slightly desperate in their quest for defensive reinforcements, won’t let Evans leave the Hawthorns for anything shy of £25m.

Yes, you did just read ‘£25m’ and no, we haven’t missed any decimal points out.

Obviously, those reading the report couldn’t quite get their heads around it.

Yes you have, James.

Farewell, Mark. Now isn’t it about time someone compared this with John Stones’ transfer fee?

Thanks Marshall.

This is how George Clooney reacted to the news. Probably.

And here’s how an Aston Villa and his Arsenal-supporting little brother took the news.

And here’s Elmo.

It wasn’t long before ‘£25m for Jonny Evans’ had started to trend on Twitter…
