Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted he has ‘no sympathy’ for Liverpool fans smarting over the loss of Raheem Sterling – because the club refused to sell Luis Suarez to the Gunners.
The London club put in the now notorious bid of £40,000,001 two years ago in an attempt to trigger a release clause in the Uruguayan forward’s contract, but the cheeky offer only hardened Liverpool’s resolve to hold on to Suarez, who they sold a year later to Barcelona for a fee somewhere between £65-£75million.
Ahead of tonight’s Premier League fixture between the sides at the Emirates, Wenger claimed Liverpool and boss Brendan Rodgers would end up rueing the departure of Sterling to Manchester City.
“I personally don’t think that Sterling was making a lot of drama,” the Frenchman said. “It’s just during the transfer window that that happened. They refused to sell us Suárez so I cannot feel too much sympathy for them.
“Let’s remember two years ago with Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling they scored over a hundred goals. To score more than 100 goals in the Premier League, you need special quality to do that.
“Sterling was part of that. I personally rate Raheem Sterling. We will see that in the longer term. He’s a quality player. But they bought [Roberto] Firmino. We will see what he will produce. He is a similar player.”
