This weekend’s going to be a bloody screamer if you plan to watch a load of sport on TV

Matthew Gault

Oh yes.

Sometimes, sporting schedules just come together really nicely.

After the expenditure of Easter and the Bank Holiday weekend, settle in for a relaxing Saturday and Sunday consuming hours upon hours of great televised sport.

We’re not even joking, this weekend is actually a screamer.

Friday

The Masters, Sky Sports Main Event, 7pm

If you’re lucky enough to have a Sky subscription, you can spend your Friday evening watching the second round of action from Augusta as Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and the rest of the lads try to make the cut for the weekend.

Saturday

Everton v Liverpool, Sky Sports Main Event, 12.30pm KO

Fresh from hammering Manchester City in the Premier League, Liverpool will be supremely confident of taking all three points away from their Merseyside rivals. If Sam Allardyce’s Everton are to stop the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, they will have to buck up their ideas after last week’s dismal showing against City, losing 3-1.

Manchester City v Manchester United, Sky Sports Main Event, 5.30pm KO

The Merseyside derby isn’t the biggest game on Sky Sports on Saturday, though, as the Manchester derby takes centre stage. United need to avoid defeat, which would see Pep Guardiola’s runaway leaders clinch the title with six games left to play. Doing it against United would oh so sweet for the Citizens, and oh so miserable for United fans.

Leinster v Zebre, TG4, 1.40pm (2pm KO)

For the rugby heads out there, Leinster are hoping to continue their excellent recent form with a win over struggling Zebre at the RDS Arena in Dublin.

The Masters, BBC Two, 7.30pm

Straight after that, flick over to the golf as the third round gets underway. They call Saturday ‘moving day’ for a reason. The tournament organisers generally make the pins accessible and push the tees forward. That usually means more birdies and excitement for us. Saturday at The Masters is always compelling television.

Oh yes, the BBC have live coverage of the weekend’s play, so that means you don’t have to tolerate Sky’s incessant ads and Colin Montgomerie.

UFC 223, BT Sport 2, 1am

After injury forced to Tony Ferguson pull out, the main event now sees Khabib Nurmagomedov facing Max Holloway with the UFC lightweight title on the line. Is it worth staying up for? Yes, yes it is.

Sunday

Kilkenny v Tipperary, TG4, 3.30pm

It’s the hurling final. It’s the Cats v Tipp. TG4 have the action from Nowlan Park as the Premier County look to get their first win over their great rivals in four league final meetings. Kilkenny edged this year’s league meeting by a point but, with players returning from injury and Jason Forde in scintillating form, Tipp have an excellent chance to exact revenge on Brian Cody’s men and take their 20th league title.

Arsenal v Southampton and Chelsea v West Ham, Sky Sports Main Event, 2.15pm & 4.30pm

If you’d prefer to stick to your Premier League, Sky Sports have an intriguing double-header. Southampton are fighting for their lives and will hope to upset Arsenal at the Emirates before Chelsea aim to make up ground on fourth-placed Tottenham when they welcome West Ham to Stamford Bridge.

The Masters, BBC Two, 6.30pm

It’s the final round at Augusta. I mean, come on, practically everyone tunes in for this, right? The last couple of years have really delivered on the drama front, too. Jordan Spieth’s collapse to open the door for Danny Willett and Sergio Garcia edging out Justin Rose in a sudden-death play-off last year. More of the same, please.
