Wayne Rooney is pulling no punches here.
The Manchester United and England forward has issued a terse statement on his Facebook denouncing an article published by the Sunday Mirror today.
In it, Rooney is essentially accused of raiding the Nike goodies from the firm’s corporate box in Wembley in 2014.
The newspaper has posted grainy CCTV footage of a man they claim to be Rooney, but the player and his representatives have strongly denied the accusations.
A spokesman for Rooney said: “There is no truth whatsoever in the anonymous claims which the Sunday Mirror has put to us. They are false and defamatory of Wayne Rooney. Wayne Rooney took no items whatsoever from the Nike box.”
Rooney himself took to Facebook to deny the claims, insisting that he was taking legal advice over whether to further pursue the matter.
He wrote: “Allegations published by the Sunday Mirror that were presented to my management team, Nike and the FA are denied by all, are wrong and total rubbish. The matter is now with my lawyers so can’t say anymore at this time.”
