Wayne Rooney may not be at the peak of his footballing powers any more, but that has not stopped him from equalling Bobby Charlton’s record of 249 goals for Manchester United.
The former Everton star is now just one away from taking the record outright after his strike against Reading in Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Old Trafford.
It is an incredible achievement and it means that once he has just one more goal for United, he will be the record goalscorer for both club and country, after he surpassed Charlton’s England record of 49 in 2015.
It is a stat that Rooney himself is clearly proud of – and he was quick to criticise the Mail for focusing instead on the shirt swap incident with Reading’s George Evans.
I find it amazing that I equal sir Bobby Charltons record and this is a headline in the mail. pic.twitter.com/MXCs1HFooT

But one journalist was equally as quick to point out that Wayne must have been reading the Mail Online website, rather than the paper…

Plenty of others also pointed out the fact that Rooney’s tweet, which read: “I find it amazing that I equal sir Bobby Charltons record and this is a headline in the mail,” doesn’t actually include a headline.
Still, we know what you were getting at, Wayne.
It’s also worth pointing out that Mail Online carried at least five articles focusing on Rooney equalling the record – and that many sites covered the incident with Evans (including this one).
But just for the record, here’s that goal again, just in case you missed it:
