Wayne Rooney is back at Everton and looking like his old self again.
Rooney scored a brilliant headed goal in the Toffees opening game of the season at home to Stoke City. It was the former Manchester United captain’s first goal for his boyhood club since 2004, and Goodison Park shook to its foundations when the ball hit the back of the net.
Just before half-time, Rooney collected a pass from Idrissa Gana Gueye, playing a give and go with the Everton midfielder. Sandro, another new signing, received the ball and played it wide to Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Rooney burst into the penalty area, away from Stoke’s defence and got on the end of a wonderful cross, directing a powerful header past Jack Butland. The forward was mobbed by his teammates and chants of “Rooney” rang around Goodison Park.
A great moment for the Everton fan on his return to the club.
It’s like he never left at all…
