Wayne Rooney proposed in an unconventional location, to say the least

Getting his fill of romance

Mikey Stafford

Tonight we’re going to learn about the man behind the goals.

And it seems the man behind the goals, namely Wayne Rooney, is an impatient man.

Wayne Rooney knows what he wants and Wayne Rooney wants it now. No dillying, no dallying.

Even if that means getting down on one knee in a petrol station forecourt.

England’s record goalscorer is the focus of a BBC documentary presented by Gary Lineker tonight and it sounds like being required viewing.

Last week we learned that the irrepressible Zlatan used the programme to have a dig at Ronaldo and this morning we got another teaser.

A teaser that tastes of corned beef hash.

The Manchester United captain had made reservations at a restaurant and intended to propose to his childhood sweetheart Coleen over dinner, but he got impatient.

So instead he proposed at a petrol station en route to the restaurant and then, instead of a fancy meal, they went home and ate corned beef hash.

Don’t let this man’s on-field persona fool you, he is a romantic. He also admits to Lineker that he used to write a lot of poetry.

BBC 1, 9pm. This could be required viewing.
