Imagine the scenes if they had’ve won a game.
Aleksandr Kokorin and Pavel Mamaev were part of the Russia squad in France that drew with England, lost 2-1 to Slovakia and were hammered 3-0 by Wales at Euro .
Russia finished bottom of their group and, with the exception of Ukraine, were comfortably the worst team at the 24 team tournament. No-one was sad to see them, and the hooligans that caused chaos in Marseille, exit the competition.
Kokorin and Mamaev attempted to put their poor display behind them by having a few drinks. Nothing wrong with that, they’re on their holidays and a poor showing at work doesn’t mean a person can’t enjoy themselves in their spare time, no matter what the Daily Mail says.
However, the two probably would’ve been wise to keep a low profile in the wake of the team’s awful display, and not spend €250,000 on champagne at a Monaco nightclub, as it has been alleged.
A video of the reported incident has emerged, and it has landed them in trouble with their clubs.
Mamaev’s team FC Krasnodar has called the player’s behaviour “outrageous and unacceptable”, fined him and demoted him to the youth team, where he’ll hopefully keep his alleged fondness for champagne to himself.
While Kokorin has claimed the pair have done nothing wrong, telling Russian media:
“Somebody was celebrating their birthday and we were simply there. Naturally, everybody saw the bottles and heard the Russian anthem, but why put all this on us?”
