Born in Limerick, raised in Clare and living in the Phoenix Park but Michael D. Higgins’ heart is in Galway.
The Irish President has a connection with Galway dating back to the early 1960s and he served the area as both a TD and a Senator for many years, as well as working for University College Galway.
Throughout his life, President Higgins has kept in with the League of Ireland and he still tries to get along to as many games as possible.
He was fortunate enough to be at Eamon Deacy Park, last night, to watch Galway United stun champions Dundalk, 2-1. The local side hit the front in the first half before David McMillan levelled the scores for Stephen Kenny’s men:

All was not lost, however, as Gary Shanahan pounced in the 92nd minute to lace home the winning goal.
One Galway fan up in the stands captured the scenes of pure joy the goal sparked. Right in the middle of it was the President of Ireland.
Get in there!

A special night for Galway who remain bottom of the league but are now in touch with St Pat’s, Sligo and Finn Harps.
