Barça throwing it back to 2011

A few weeks ago it looked almost certain Atlético Madrid would win their first league title in seven years, with both Real Madrid and Barcelona suffering from internal crises as their star players waned. But recent form would indicate Barcelona are going to take it right down to the wire, as they put six past Real Sociedad – no mean feat given they also led the title charge for a spell earlier on this season.

Braces from Sergiñ0 Dest and Lionel Messi saw Barça run riot at the Anoeta, turning on the style and scoring the sort of goals reminiscent of the displays Pep Guardiola’s teams used to put out on a regular basis during the glory years a decade ago.

Atlético Madrid maintained their four point lead at the top with a very on-brand 1-0 win, as Luis Suarez headed in Kieran Trippier’s cross. But recent performances, including a draw to Getafe, will be ringing alarm bells as the season comes to a close. More goals are needed if they are to wrap up this title.

Valencia picked up a hugely important win, beating 8th placed Granada 2-1, with the consolation goal coming from former Valencia man Roberto Soldado. That puts Los Che a comfortable 10 points clear of safety in a season when, at times, it looked as though their financial crisis could have dragged them into the second tier of Spanish football.
