We’re deliberately getting ahead of ourselves here.
Paul Byrne was a proud man last night. He’s equally proud today.
The Dubliner had an impressive career that traversed professional and amateur football at high levels.
Byrne started off in the Arsenal youth system before a great spell with Bangor earned him a move to Celtic. He spent two seasons there and scored a memorable goal in an Old Firm clash with Rangers. He finished out his career in the League of Ireland and had stints with St Pat’s, Dundalk and Bohemians.
Byrne’s son, Kurtis Byrne, is now flying the family flag and doing it in style. The 25-year-old midfielder also had footballing stints in Scotland but made a name for himself with a highly successful Dundalk side.
Kurtis moved to Bohs ahead of the 2016 season and has got off to a flyer.
After some note-worthy league outings, Byrne ran amok in Bohs’ 4-3 Leinster Senior Cup win over Dundalk, last night.
Peter O’Doherty captured this great footage of Byrne’s impudent hat-trick and shared it on the club’s official Facebook page.
With Dundalk goalkeeper Gary Rogers called into Ireland’s most recent training squad, Martin O’Neill is clearly keeping an eye on the SSE Airtricity League.
If Byrne can keep this level of performance up, he may turn a call-up murmur into a clamour. Stranger things have happened.
