WATCH: Japanese school’s bizarre free kick routine proves to be very effective

Simple but effective

Ben Kiely

Here’s something new to try out on the training ground.

Japanese high school East Fukuoka have gifted the world with a marvelous set piece routine.

The idea is simple, try to bamboozle the defensive wall and obscure the goalkeeper’s view by setting up a wall of offensive players in front of the ball. As the free kick taker makes his run up, the offensive line of players began stepping backwards before all ducking in unison as the ball sailed over their heads.

By the time it fired over the opposing team’s wall, the goalkeeper had already seen it too late and wasn’t able to react in time. He was powerless as he came up way short with his attempted save as the ball crashed into the corner of the net.
