For all the world it looked like young Celtic defender Eoghan O’Connell was going to leather the ball with his left foot as it broke to him outside the box in the second half of the Hoops’ International Champions Cup game with Leicester.
But, rather than just hit it and hope, O’Connell deftly curled it into the bottom corner of the Premier League champions’ goal with his right.
After falling behind to a cracking Riyad Mahrez goal, Cork-born O’Connell artfully drew Celtic level with this incredible goal that will do no harm whatsoever to keeping himself in Brendan Rodgers’ thoughts for the coming season.
The 20-year-old made his Celtic debut two years ago but was shipped out to Cork City and Oldham last season to gain experience.
O’Connell, a cousin of former Ireland rugby captain Paul O’Connell, didn’t feature much for either before being recalled to Celtic Park in April and if he keeps performing like he did on Saturday, he’ll be going nowhere this summer.
A Republic of Ireland U21 international, don’t be surprised if O’Connell enters Martin O’Neill’s considerations sooner rather than later.
