On Saturday, Chelsea Football Club apologised to Gary Johnson for the sexual abuse he suffered as a youth team player in the 1970s.

The 57-year-old had told the Mirror that he’d been paid £50,000 by the club to keep quiet about the allegations of the abuse by one of its former chief scouts.

A statement from the club acknowledged that everyone at the club had been ‘profoundly shocked’ to learn of the historical child sex abuse across British football, noting that Mr Johnson had ‘suffered unacceptably’ while at the club.

Reporting live from outside  Stamford Bridge, reporter Sophie Long updated viewers of BBC news on the latest developments. As she gives details of the statement, a security guard can be seen briefly passing behind her. A few seconds later he reappears, interrupting the live broadcast to tell her she needs to move along.

A video of the incident was posted on Twitter by 5news correspondent, Julian Druker.
