It looks like Mats Hummels’ Borussia Dortmund career is coming to a close.
The Dortmund captain has had a storied career with BVB, playing nine seasons winning two Bundesliga titles, a DFB-Pokal trophy, two DFL Supercups and a UEFA Champions League runners-up medal after losing the 2012/13 final to the team that shall not be named.
Hummels was adored by the loyal Dortmund support for his years of service, but the confirmation this week that the defender has handed in a transfer request to rejoin rivals Bayern Munich, where he began his professional career, has left a bitter taste in their mouths.
The German World Cup winner received an incredibly frosty reception at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday during Dortmund’s dominant 5-1 win over Wolfsburg. Whenever he touched the ball, he was greeted with a chorus of whistles and jeers from the Dortmund fans.
