If you need one example that perfectly encapsulates what it means to be a leader, then look no further.
Benfica’s Luisao proved to the world that he deserves to wear the captain’s armband during his side’s 4-0 win over Feirense at the weekend.
His team were attempting to take a free-kick just outside the box, but the set-piece kept being delayed thanks to the the opposition players out-jostling a pair of Benfica’s younger players who were unusccessfully trying to unsettle the wall.
Luisao (35) watched on as Jose Gomes (17) and Victor Lindelof (22) kept being out-muscled by the defenders. His eyes bulged and his throat became red-raw as he screamed instructions in between the referee’s constant interventions.
Seeing that his teammates were struggling, Luisao decided enough was enough and that it was time to lead by example. He ordered the duo to make room as he sprinted into the middle of the action.
When he finally got into position he stood strong and held his ground which caused all of the wall to gravitate towards him. With the wall unsettled, the free-kick taker seized the moment and sent the ball flying into the top corner of the net.
