There was heartbreak for Warrenpoint Town FC on Sunday as one of the worst penalty decisions ever sealed their relegation from the NIFL Premiership.
It looked like the Down club were going to avoid the drop after holding a 1-0 lead against Dungannon until the 90th minute thanks to Stephen Hughes’ opener. They would have remained in the Premiership if they held on to the win.
In the final moments of the match everything changed when referee Ross Dunlop awarded Dungannon a very controversial penalty.
The referee pointed to the spot after Warrenpoint’s Jordan Dane was clattered by opponent Cormac Burke inside the box. Dane went down in a heap and reports from the game are that the linesman actually flagged for a free-kick out, but the penalty was still given.
Ryan Harpur’s spot kick was saved by Jonathan Parr, but Andrew Mitchell followed up and scored the rebound.

After the match, one young fan was in tears over the decision, but goalkeeper Parr cheered the boy up by giving him his jersey.
