12 yards, five penalties apiece … and way too much slipping.
Bayern Munich’s hopes of a treble literally fell on its arse tonight when not one of their penalty takers could find the back of the net during a shootout at the end of their German Cup semi-final against Borussia Dortmund.
The momentum was with the reigning champions after extra time when, with the game level at 1-1, Dortmund’s Kevin Kampl was given his marching orders for a second yellow card but not a goal could be found.
Bayern would have been confident going into the shootout, having won their last five, as captain Phillip Lahm stepped up. But his slip gave Dortmund a dream opening.
With Xabi Alonso, usually the coolest man on the planet, Pep Guardiola would have been expectant of Munich converting but again, he went arse into turf.
Mario Goetze was next up and his sole focus would have been staying on his feet but all that concentration led to him having his penalty saved by Langerak.
With nothing to lose, Manuel Neuer stood up to attempt to give Munich some hope but he saw his effort come clattering back off the crossbar and Dortmund moved on to the final without even the need for a fifth penalty to be taken.
Penalty practice in training tomorrow then?
