A most English way to have your heart broken
Sometimes you have to feel sorry for England.
With the men’s international team consistently unable to get over coming up on 50 years of psychological baggage at major tournaments, the feelgood story of the women’s team’s run to the World Cup semi-finals in Canada was a pleasant surprise for our near neighbours.
But, once again, just as the casual observer had been drawn onto the bandwagon, the Lionesses conjured up yet another horrific way to crash out of a tournament, one that even John Terry, Gareth Southgate or Chris Waddle would be proud of.
Level at 1-1 with Japan heading into injury-time, defender Laura Bassett,, became the fall girl with this extraordinarily unfortunate own goal.
Twitter was quick to console Bassett, who by all accounts has had a magnificent competition, even confusing here with a reporter who took bizarre enjoyment from the extra attention.
Guys I'm not Laura Bassett the soccer player. But feel free to continue tweeting at me it's kinda fun
