It’s a long held piece of wisdom that a couple of carefully timed drinks will lighten the tongue before taking to the stage.
‘Couple’, ‘carefully’ and ‘timed’ being the key words in that sentence.
Louis van Gaal is an accomplished public speaker, so probably operates on a different system to the rest of us and has no need for a few looseners.
