Our favourite type of interview
You would think that when interviewing one of the best football players on the planet that you would just let him speak and rattle off why he had such an unbelievable game.
Short, simple questions to tease out how he created so many chances and how he was thwarted time and again by an incredible goalkeeping performance.
And that’s generally how it played out when the official Champions League journalists got hold of Lionel Messi after last night’s 1-0 win over Manchester City.
We’re sure the interview sounded fine in Spanish, but unfortunately when it was translated into English the voiceover guy makes it hilariously awkward.
Either he’s being very faithful to the questions being asked and translating word for word or he is having a laugh at our expense
Messi’s first asked about Joe Hart which is fair enough but in the answer he uses the phrase ‘top notch’ which we’re fairly sure is not something that would ever be uttered by the Argentine ever. Like never ever.
The second question is a dead giveaway that maybe all is not what it seems as the translation that we hear goes along the lines of: ‘You’ve just mentioned the draw – is this not proof that football is awesome?’
Messi’s quizzical look after it’s asked says more than we could ever hope to capture here.
It’s like questions and answers for four year olds.
