The phrase “comedy of errors” comes to mind.
You’ll be forgiven for not knowing what a Damallsvenskan is, let alone knowing how to pronounce it. fear not though as we do (after Google told us) it’s the top flight of Swedish women’s football. It’s also the league that produced what’s likely to be the worst own goal of 2015.
During a clash between Örebro and Hammarby a rather innocuous ball being played back to the Hammarby goalkeeper caused havoc less than three minutes into the game.
The goalkeeper’s attempted clearance was blocked by an Orebro attacker and drifted back relatively harmlessly toward goal.
Luckily, defender Helen Eke had tracked back without any pressure whatsoever from any opposition players in order to make the clearance. Unfortunately, he resulting effort didn’t go exactly to plan and resulted in a spectacular own goal.
Orebro lost the match 3-1 as Eke was taken off after just half an hour.
