VIDEO: Sterling assists from behind the line but Everton fans go into Martinez meltdown anyway

The ball was out

Conan Doherty

Was it out?

Of course it was.

Everton blew a 3-1 aggregate lead in the Capital One Cup semi-final second leg and they did so in controversial circumstances.

The Toffees went to Manchester City 2-1 to the good and, when Ross Barkley struck in the first half, they were on their way to Wembley for a Merseyside derby showpiece.

It wasn’t to be.

Fernandinho made it 1-1 on the night but, as Everton threatened to do the most un-Roberto Martinez thing ever and hang on, Man City rode their luck and were gifted a second goal when it should’ve been ruled out.

It wasn’t.

De Bruyne rattled it in and Sergio Aguero scored a third and Man City set up a final clash with Liverpool on February 28.

The analysis all got very, very technical.

If that wasn’t enough proof.

But that bit of bad fortune couldn’t spare Roberto Martinez.
