There are few goals that you just don’t get tired of seeing and Stephanie Roche’s now-famous strike is undeniably one of them.
The 25-year-old is on the brink of global glory as the winner of Fifa’s Puskas Award will be announced tomorrow evening in Zurich with this goal, scored when she played for Peamount United, in the final three.
And SportsJOE’s lovely sister HER.ie spoke to the Dubliner about her whirlwind journey since she found out about her nomination late last year.
“It’s been crazy ever since it was announced in the top ten, it was a bit of a surprise,” Roche said.
“And then to get to the top three … it was brilliant to see the support it got because it was a public vote.”
The striker, who’s currently under contact with French side ASPTT Albi, revealed how she first heard the news via her Twitter feed.
“I was actually in my apartment in France and I got a tweet about it and then a load more tweets started coming through so I knew something was going on.”
With just a few hours left to go until the winner is announced, the Irish international has urged the Irish public to really make the effort for the goal which you can vote for here.
She said: “It’s got such great support over here and I think the Irish people are really getting behind their own so I hope we can push now and maybe beat the Colombians and the Dutch to try to win the award.”
Roche also mentions how she struggled to adapt when she made the move to French football last year which is interesting considering the fact that she has since revealed that she is set to quit her club.
“It was obviously a difficult transformation for me to be going over to a new country, (to learn) a new language. It’s been difficult off the pitch but on the pitch I’ve been playing really well in the last few weeks so I’m just hoping to keep on going and get the team into a good position for finishing the league.”
