Anyone remember this?
In 1997, a Liverpool team featuring Jamie Carragher, Jason McAteer, Steve McManaman and Robbie Fowler took part in a six-a-side tournament against some of the best teams in Europe. Ajax hosted the tournament in the Amsterdam Arena, also featuring Barcelona, AC Milan and Rangers.
In the video below, Liverpool take on Milan, who have Roberto Baggio and Edgar Davids in their side, and it looks like something from the console game FIFA street.
The tournament took place at the end of January 1997, strange considering the rigours of a Premier League season, and each team earned £120,000 for taking part. A certain Liverpool player, who’s reportedly seeking a transfer, wouldn’t get out of bed for that amount.
The games were played on a smaller pitch, split into four eight minute periods and teams had five substitutes. The TV rights were also sold throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We don’t remember it on TVÂ though.
The hosts had hoped to make it an annual event, featuring more of Europe’s best teams, but never took off.
