He knew it was a stupid question as soon as he’d asked it.
Leicester City mean business. They sit proudly atop the table with a healthy five-point lead, and there’s only nine games to go. The most sensational story of the Premier League era is looking more than likely.
Throughout their thrilling campaign, the Foxes have been underestimated, dismissed, belittled and generally patronised. Just lately though, it seems they’re finally getting the kind of respect they deserve.
But there is still a sticky residue of disregard. That was apparent on Saturday, after the East Midlands side proved they can grind out results by overcoming an extremely obstinate Watford side at Vicarage Road.
Appearing on Sky Sports following the victory, chief architect Claudio Ranieri was full of praise for his match winner and creative gem, Riyad Mahrez. As so often this season, 25-year-old was the difference.
But Sky’s David Jones, usually so accomplished in his presenting skills, dropped an absolute clanger in his follow-up question. Somehow neglecting the fact that Leicester are peerless this season, he asked:
“Is he [Mahrez] though at the very top level, Claudio? Do you think he could play for any of the top six clubs in England?”
Despite the quite bonkers sentiment of the question, the Italian answered with good grace and utter conviction: “I think he can play with us!”
You know you’ve had a ‘mare when even Jamie Redknapp reacts with wry incredulity…
