Stagnation? Inertia?
Paul Merson is one relieved man in this video. Sky Sports just released a clip compiling February’s funniest moments from Soccer Saturday, and it features a slightly awkward question from Jeff Stelling.
The host and Phil Thompson are talking about Sunderland’s season. ‘How patient do you have to be if you’re a Sunderland fan?’ Stelling asks the former Liverpool player. ‘Is there a difference between patience and inertia, or stagnation?’
Cue a sharp exhalation of breathe from Merson, who’s overcome with laughter and relief that the potentially tricky question wasn’t directed at him.
There’s also a few excitable moments from Jeff, and a few decent one-liners, but the video is worth a watch for Merse’s reaction alone.
