To commemorate their 60-year anniversary, Uefa held an online vote to decide the 10 best goals in their history. The question remains, why didn’t we know about it?
Uefa let the public vote for the their favourites of the 60 best goals scored in Uefa competitions. Over two million individual ratings later, they have decided on their top 10.
Ronnie Whelan’s wonderstrike against the USSR in Euro 88 was one of the goals the public could vote for. Unfortunately, his outstanding volley against the Russians failed to make the final cut. Considering how the Irish got behind Stephanie Roche on her quest to claim the prestigious Puskas award, we feel that if this ballot was advertised a bit better, we could have gotten Ronnie’s stellar finish through to the final stage.
Bitterness aside, who needs awards anyway? Here’s Ronnie’s pre-wondergoal era wondergoal for all to enjoy.
Oh yeah, and check out the greatest 10 goals in Uefa’s history as chosen by the internet public below. It’s important to note that they have not been ranked. Uefa listed them on their official website in chronological order.
