Manchester United will now be playing their European football on Thursdays after slumping to a 3-2 defeat to Wolfsburg on Tuesday night.
BT Sport’s coverage of the game featured former Red Devils Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand, as well as Michael Owen in the studio.
Knowing it would get a reaction from the panel, host Gary Lineker posed the question, “are Manchester United becoming the new Liverpool?” to his guests based on the fact that they’ve gone from being a Champions League staple to competing in the Europa League.
Ferdinand and Scholes reacted by burying their faces into their hands, while a cheeky grin washed over former Red Michael Owen’s face.
