Video: Lech Poznan put on an unbelievable flare display last night

Careful now

Robert Redmond

Now this is a protest.

Lech Poznan fans weren’t happy during their Champions League qualifer against FC Basel last night. Uefa had decreed that it’s dangerous to bring flare into football grounds. Poznan fans didn’t agree.

Uefa ruled that clubs where fans brought flares into stadiums could be fined, or forced to play games behind closed doors.

How did Poznan react? By putting on an impressive flare display, behind a giant banner reading: “Danger: High Risk Supporters”, in an attempt to show Uefa that flares are as safe as the curry chips at football grounds.

Will it work? Will Uefa rule that Poznan fans can now bring flares into grounds. They lost the game 3-1, so they probably won’t have another Champions League game this season to make their point.

They could always protest with flares if they end up in the Europa League, but there probably won’t be as many people watching that.
