VIDEO: If you thought Louis van Gaal was happy with Man Utd’s victory, think again

Not impressed

Patrick McCarry

The Dutchman looked like he wanted to punch a wall at the final whistle.

Manchester United defeated Wolfsburg 2-1 at Old Trafford, last night, but they were far from impressive after hitting the front with 40 minutes to play.

United only registered one shot on goal thereafter [from Anthony Martial] while they relied on crucial interventions, in their own box, from Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones to stay in front.

Louis van Gaal replaced a fatigued Bastian Schweinsteiger after 70 minutes and although Daley Blind moved into midfield, United could not retain possession for long enough to relieve pressure or mount meaningful attacks.

Post-match, van Gaal said United should have been in front by half-time but praised his players’ spirit early in the second half. He commented, “After then, it was not good anymore. That is remarkable because we have kept the ball in our possession very well in the last five or six matches.”

The United boss blames ‘the accumulation of matches’ over the past month and the Premier League ‘rat race’ for his players’ performance levels dipping. “We have to improve, I said it to the players… Today, we won this game but it could have been in a better way,” he added.
