If you want something done right, as the old adage goes.
Non-league outfit Grays Athletic came from 2-0 down at half-time to claim a 3-2 victory over Hampton and Richmond Borough last week. However, their comeback was a little more spectacular than it appears on paper.
Grays player-manager Mark Bentley, frustrated by a lacklustre performance from his side, decided that the best solution was to suit up and bring himself on as a substitute. Bentley took the field shortly after the half-time, with his team 2-1 down and made a huge impact on the game.
First, Bentley guided a header into the back of the net to bring the game level. Then, 13 minutes from the final whistle, disaster struck as the Grays goalkeeper was given his marching orders.
With no substitute keeper on the bench, the boss slapped on the goalie’s jersey and a pair of gloves and stood between the posts.
Four minutes later, it looked like the game was going to go away from 10-man Grays as the opposition was awarded a penalty. However, Bentley stood up to plate and saved the spot-kick which spurred his team on to grab a dramatic, stoppage time winner.
Even the writers of Dream Team couldn’t write something that far-fetched.
