Standing at 6″6, it’s easy to see how Arsenal’s German defender Per Mertesacker managed to head in the Gunners’ third in their 4-0 FA Cup final triumph over Aston Villa on Saturday.
As well as making him an easy target for a set-piece, his towering stature has earned him the moniker ‘BFG’ from the Arsenal faithful. Unlike the eponymous character in Roald Dahl’s classic, his nickname contains one of the words broadcasters are warned not to say before the watershed.
Apparently, the same rules do not apply to German Eurosport, as one of their commentators screamed Mertesacker’s nickname in full, expletive and all.
