Nothing has changed

Fuerte Apache is clearly a place that Carlos Tevez holds dear to his heart.

Now that the Argentine is back at Boca Juniors, the homesickness he suffered while playing in Europe has been replaced with hometown pride.

In a recent interview on Argentinian TV, the striker opened up about his hometown barrio of Feurte Apache and the generosity of the people that live there.

An emotional Tevez explained how his unemployed friends from the hood still insist on paying for things whenever he visits, despite the fact that his earning power is clearly a lot higher than theirs.

Check out the TV host being moved to tears by the wonderful story in the video embedded below. Underneath that, you’ll find the English translation of the conversation.

Tevez: My parents taught me this.

Alex: For you it’s natural, to be humble.

Tevez: I get mad when they tell me I expose my teammates. I don’t expose anyone, I’m like that. If any other player doesn’t want to sign an autograph, it’s not his fault or mine. I want to sign autographs and I know I owe the people. It’s natural for me; I’m not exposing a player. That kind of bugs me.

Alex: Why do you think the hood taught you that? Is it a hood with humble people?

Tevez: Yes, if you ever needed something…

Alex: I’m not talking about being humble economically; I’m talking about their attitude towards life. In the hood that you grew up, are they a humble and loyal people?

Tevez: Yes, I’m getting together with my friends 1-2 times a week in the hood. My friends don’t let me pay for anything. I have 5-6 friends [drinks water since he is getting choked up], of whom 3 have jobs. Every time I go see them they pay for everything, and I realize the kind of place I’m from.

Alex: That surprises you.

Tevez: It surprises me… we were always like that and nothing changed, not even for me.

Alex: Nothing changed for you after everything that happened to you?

Tevez: No, what we have is our day to day life.
